Scotland
Your note
Scotland is famous for bagpipes, haggis, whiskey, Braveheart, Trainspotting, and of course, the Loch Ness monster. Famous Scottish faces include Sean Connery, Robbie Coltrane and Billy Connelly. Scotland is about half the size of England, and over half the country is mountain and moorland. It has a population of 5.1 million and the capital city is Edinburgh.
The Scots are a feisty bunch - opinionated, animated, funny and extremely loyal to their country. The landscape is wild, untamed, romantic and incredibly beautiful.
Although, geographically on the same Island, Scotland is different from England, in every respect. Don’t confuse the two! The Scottish have a rock-solid identity and strong sense of self.
The climate can be harsh, but the atmosphere and culture more than make up for it. The Edinburgh Festival is a prime example. Every year a mass influx of extremely courageous stand-up comedians arrive and perform in front of crowds of pumped up Scottish fans and hecklers. The atmosphere is as intense as it is hilarious. Humour’s an important part of Scottish life.
Scotland has an impressive artistic legacy, from Robbie Burns - Scotland’s most famous poet to grunge-and-drugs writers like Irvine Welsh. Then there’s “Sick Boy” and “Begbie” - Ewan McGregor and Robert Carlyle two Scottish actors who have gone on to become major Hollywood stars.
Scotland produces some of the finest whiskey in the world. It also has a very distinctive cuisine, often based on very traditional foods. It’s well known for its lamb, beef, venison, trout and salmon along with game birds such as grouse and pheasant.
Scotland has everything; style, culture, history, great shopping and some of the best partying anywhere. Its diverse landscape is spectacular - ideal for every kind of outdoor activity, from walking to water sports. Whether you’re looking for a tranquil break or an adrenalin rush, there’s something here for you. The best time to visit in from May to September.
