Scotland is the birthplace of golf and home to the world’s oldest golf course - Musselburgh Old Links. It’s so old that apparently Mary Queen of Scots played a few rounds here back in 1567. Some of the Mussleburgh heroes include Fiery (John Carey), the Dunns twins, Willie Campbell (born in 1862), John Gourlay and the McEwan Family.
Today Mussleburgh is a simple municipal 9 hole course that weaves in and out of the surrounding race course. It’s a top quality course and well worth playing on even just for the sense of history.
It’s very easy to get to. Musselburgh Links is served by an excellent bus service that comes from all over East Lothian and also from Edinburgh. You can also travel by train stopping at either Musselburgh or Wallyford rail station, which are just a 5 minute taxi ride from the course.
